Penny Elder

About Penny

I am a retired psychoanalytical psychotherapist, having seen individual patients, couples, plus training, supervising, and running courses and groups.  I enjoy singing, yoga, opera, have four children and eight granddaughters, and spend time in remote Scotland with my husband, a retired GP,  Having painted all my life, I acquired a studio in 2004 where I paint and also screenprint and monoprint.  I exhibit my work annually and have had several solo exhibitions.

My Work

My oil paintings are usually abstract or semi-abstract vaguely-remembered landscapes, often inspired by the Scottish landscape with which I am familiar, but all emerging from my imagination.  My screenprints and monoprints are often abstract, and since the Covid-19 pandemic I have painted a series on 'Lockdown' and also produced a series of monoprints on 'Together Again'.  I enjoy the difference between the two mediums which allows for a variety of expressions and results, and particularly love layering as our lives are built up on layers of our past experiences.  I have always been interested in expressing the relationship between the internal and external worlds, but I would say nowadays that I just paint, letting things emerge from my subconscious before taking control and shaping different aspects of my image.  This feels freer and more expressive of my mood.

I am looking forward to my next solo exhibition at Highgate Gallery (HLSI) from 10th to 23rd September 2021
