Gail Altschuler

About Gail

Clay as Canvas. Blurring the lines between art and craft. Selected member of The Craft Potters Association.

Drawings from my sketchbooks filled with observations of life, friends, family, art museums and galleries.

Themes; the refugees, masks, zoom meetings, musicians, people on their phones, edgy portraits, at the cafe and at the beach.

Narrative or storytelling ceramics using clay and porcelain as my canvas.

The porcelain and stoneware clays are painted onto with coloured slips or etched into and the lines filled with underglaze colours, then high fired under a transparent glaze in an electric kiln.

'This is primitive and sophisticated all at the same time' an insightful comment on my Instagram account.

My Work

Contemporary artist, painter, potter and art teacher. Blurring the lines between art and craft.

When I'm not printing onto porcelain, clay or canvas or teaching art and ceramic classes, you'll find me out at museums with my sketchbook.

My work is inspired by drawing from observation and from art history.

I teach drawing, painting and hand built ceramics from my home studio in Finchley Central and on Zoom, to adults, teens and children.

PGCE and MA in Art and Design Education, UCL. BA in Fine Art and History of Art and a Diploma in Art and Design, from The Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam.
