ABOUT DAVID
I specialise in Mokuhanga – the Japanese water-colour based wood block printmaking method. I am drawn to the subtle relationships between the block, the colour, and the paper, and how these are mediated directly by hand rather than by mechanical press. I make work that is a personal response to internal and external imagery, drawing on my background in Jungian and psychoanalytic understandings of imagination and creativity and the ways these play with loss, memory and the development of new ways of being in the world.

MY WORK
Having done a substantial portfolio of short courses over the past 30-plus years, including stone and metal sculpture, drawing, oil-based printmaking, and textiles, I have specialised in Mokuhanga for the past 14 years, studying with acclaimed UK artists Lucy May Schofield and Carole Wilhide Justin. I had the fantastic opportunity to be a part of MI-Lab’s Advanced Artist in Residence programme in Echizen, Japan in June/July 2026. Being with fellow international printmakers and Japanese artist/instructors has expanded my vision of what this wonderful medium can achieve. I look forward to continuing to develop in my practice. My work is held in collections in the UK, USA, and East Asia.
