ABOUT NATALIA

Enchanted by Asian Art and the Japanese concept of ‘wabi-sabi’, appreciating beauty in impermanence and imperfection, I create paintings and calligraphy, and sometimes books, inspired by the exquisite cultural traditions of Japan, China and Islamic lands. With an emphasis on the beauty of nature and a deep admiration for societies around the world, I explore the accessibility and translatability of various cultures in my creations. I aim to bring harmony into everyday life. My pieces showcase the beauty, love, and kindness that I encounter on my journey and I aim to share a piece of my heart with you.

MY WORK

I began practicing Japanese calligraphy in 2014, studying with the Japanese Calligraphy Foundation. My work is assessed and graded in Japan, where I hold 5th dan ranking in Kanji calligraphy, specializing in five major scripts (Kaisho, Gyosho, Sosho, Rensho, and Tensho). I also practice Kana, the elegant “woman’s hand” script, and regularly participate in competitions organized by the Foundation.
My passion for Japanese culture extends to my Postgraduate Diploma studies in Asian Art at the School of Oriental and Asian Studies, London, and my practice of Japanese tea ceremony. During the lockdowns, I explored Gongbi, or Chinese meticulous brush painting, completing a professional-level course. Gongbi’s intricate detail and vibrant colours complement my calligraphy background, allowing me to create works that reflect the beauty of nature with precision and patience.
I also hold a Master’s degree from the King’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, where I studied disciplines including calligraphy, geometry, miniature painting, and ceramics. My work blends a deep respect for traditional art forms with own artistic voice, celebrating cultural diversity and natural beauty.
