About Michael
Since childhood I've loved drawing and painting and after retiring from my work as a surgeon I retrained as an artist and give lectures on the links between art and medicine.
I'm fortunate to have a studio on our top floor overlooking Hampstead Heath and still attend classes at the Hampstead School of Art (HSOA).

My Work
I'm a friend of the Royal Academy, the National Gallery (NG) and the Tate. I visit all their exhibitions but often drop in at the NG to wander round on my own. I used to take my medical students on a "ward round" at the NG interpreting many paintings that are linked to common diseases and also teach about those artists exhibited who suffered for their work. My style tends to shift according to the latest artist exhibited and shamelessly copy the styles of colourist that catch my fancy.
I've spent many hours a life classes and most of my work contains figures but I also enjoy painting still life and trying my hand at multimedia techniques or abstract art. I like bold colours, sharp edges and thick paint. Lots of reds and greens. In retrospect I seem to use a lot of alizarine red. My favourite works are when the HOSA provides a model with dark toned skin that provides strong contrast between highlights and shadows.
Exhibitions
- I exhibit with the Medical Art Society and the HGSArt group. I also have a website linked to the Saatchi gallery; https://www.saatchiart.com/account/profile/1566167
