About Merav

I have always loved to draw and paint. My earliest memories are of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv - bright blue skies and sea, flowers, lemon trees and avocados, fireflies after dark. Vibrant children's book illustrations and Middle-Eastern arts and crafts also fascinated me. Moving with my family to London at the age of 6 I was then immersed in the soft greys, blues, greens and purples of Britain, and visited art galleries with my parents. All these impressions and more still influence my work today.

My Work

I studied art throughout my school years and was taught traditional techniques. I continued to make art for pleasure alongside my work as a geographer and environmental campaigner. I often made small watercolour paintings as visual diaries while travelling and living abroad. While raising my children I was inspired afresh by their natural artistic creativity, so I joined painting and print-making classes and began painting more often at home in Muswell Hill.

I use sustainable, non-toxic materials wherever possible to protect myself, my family and the planet. I mix my oil paints from pure non-toxic earth pigments and walnut oil, as the old masters did before solvents like turpentine were introduced. As well as painting in oils I draw in pencil and ink, paint with watercolours and pastels, and make ephemeral art from found materials on country walks or even from vegetable peelings on my kitchen table.

My inspiration comes from the natural world, from people, memories and imagination.
